    # How to Book a Hotel for Family in Japan - 14 Experts Tips
Most hotels allow only three guests per room.
    ...
    ## 1. Choose apartment-style hotels for a family of 4+ people
If you travel with a big family and don't want to split into several rooms, this is the best option.
    ...
Brands like Mimaru specialize in this style.
They're not just a place to sleep, but are designed for families to live
**Where to find them**: Mostly in big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
Mimaru has multiple locations in Tokyo (Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Asakusa).
    ## 2. Choose Family Rooms or Connecting Rooms for a family with less than 4 people
If you prefer the familiar service, and your travel group is less than 4 people.
Family rooms or connecting rooms are the best choice for you.
In Japanese hotels, twin and triple rooms are common.
Quad rooms (four real beds) exist but are limited.
    ...
If you want connecting rooms, be aware that they are required only!
    ## 3. Request If you want Connecting Rooms
Except for some Hiltons (Hilton Tokyo, for example), connecting rooms in most Japanese hotels are requested only.
That means the hotel notes your request, but it's not guaranteed.
You'll only know for sure at check-in.
The best way to improve your chances
    - **Book as early as possible**, best around 6 months in advance.
    - **Email or call the hotel** right after booking to request connecting rooms.
    - **Or use a local travel expert** (like us)—we know which hotels actually work for families and can help secure the best rooms.
    Contact Us Now!
**If you cannot book connecting rooms**, don't worry.
You can ask for adjacent rooms or rooms on the same floor.
Not quite connected, but close enough to keep the family together.
    ...
    ## 6. Provide the Accurate Number of Guests When Booking
Hotels in Japan charge by the number of guests.
The hotel room price may vary depending on how many people are staying.
So when you book, make sure you enter the exact number of guests, including children and infants.
This affects both the price and which room types are available.
    ...
    ## 7. Check the Child Policy before Booking
**If your child is over 6**, many hotels count them as an adult.
You may pay 50–80% of the adult rate, or even the full adult price at some business hotels.
Usually, kids will share a bed with you rather than getting their own.
**For children aged 0–2 years**: Most hotels won't charge, but you'll need to pay extra if you want a crib.
    ...
Always check the child policy before booking.
This helps you avoid surprises at check-in and makes sure your family has the beds and space you need.
    ...
    ## 12. Book Early, then Follow Up
Family rooms, connecting rooms, bunk-bed options, and hotels like Mimaru sell out the fastest.
    ...
Look for international chains for more family-friendly room types, such as Hilton, Hyatt, and Prince.
After booking, it's always a good idea to email the hotel directly.
You can confirm your room type, request adjacent rooms, and note any special needs such as a crib, children's meals, or an accessible bath.
    ...
    ## 13. Location Tip for Tokyo Families
In Tokyo, **areas like Asakusa and Ueno usually work better for families**.
You'll find more spacious rooms there and several options from Mimaru.
    ...
    ## FAQ on Japan Family Hotels
    ### Can a Family of 4–5 Share One Room in Japan?
Yes, a family of 4–5 can stay together, but you need the right room type.
For **Western-style hotels**, look for family rooms, quad rooms, connecting rooms, or apartment-style hotels like Mimaru.
These rooms are designed for families, with proper beds and enough space to move around.
Quad rooms are limited, and rooms for five or six people are rare.
Some higher-end hotels — like Hilton Tokyo or Hyatt properties — offer family suites that fit 5–6 guests.
So book early, around 6 months in advance, to get a better chance.
    ...
    ### How to Book a Room for 5+ People in Japan
Finding a room for a family of five (2 adults and 3 kids) can be a real challenge in Japan.
Most standard hotels don't have rooms that fit five people, and booking for larger families can feel overwhelming.
    ...
**Look for Apartment-style Hotels** like MIMARU or & Here, which offer spacious family accommodations, including kitchens and living areas.
These can comfortably house 5 or more.
**Consider High-End Chain Hotels**: Booking connecting rooms at hotels like Hilton, where they are more likely to accommodate larger families.
**Booking Adjacent Rooms**: If your budget allows, you can book two adjacent rooms.
Sometimes it's easier to split up the kids and the adults, but this option can be pricier.
As a general rule, book as early as possible (6 months in advance) to secure the best options for your family.
    ### Does the Hotel Provide Extra Beds for Kids?
Most standard hotel rooms in Japan don't have extra beds.
If you book a room for two adults and bring a child, your child will usually sleep in the same bed with you.
This is very common in Japan and is called co-sleeping (添い寝 / soine).
For babies and toddlers (under 2), you can request a crib.
Many mid-range or higher-end hotels provide one for free.
Always ask in advance to be safe.
Kids under 6 often share beds for free.
Japanese beds are narrower than Western beds, so it can feel crowded.
    ...
    ### What If We Can't Get One Room? Will the Kids Be on Another Floor?
**Try to book connecting rooms first**.
After booking, email the hotel and ask them to note your request for adjacent rooms.
Follow up again about 1–2 weeks before arrival.
It's not guaranteed, but it improves your chances.
You can also prioritize **family-friendly hotel** chains such as Prince Hotels or Richmond Hotels.
Another easy option is an **apartment-style hotel like Mimaru**.
These are designed for families and usually keep everyone in one larger room.

Do Japanese hotels have family rooms? | Small Steps Japan
    https://www.smallstepsjapan.com/guides/japanese-hotels-family-rooms

    # Do Japanese hotels have family rooms?
Family rooms do exist, but you need to know what to search for, because a standard double won’t hold four or five.
    ## Why standard rooms are small
Booking sites also cap how many guests a room allows, so a room that physically looks fine may not be bookable for your numbers.

So settle the rooms before you settle the route: because occupancy limits are enforced, a family of five usually needs two rooms at a conventional hotel, and apartment hotels are the standard way around it.
    ## Room types that fit a family
    - Family rooms or “quad” rooms with three or four beds.
    ...
    ## Tricks that make it work
    - Filter by number of guests so sites only show rooms that fit you.
    - Look for “family”, “quad”, “Japanese-style” or “apartment” in room names.
    - Consider connecting rooms or two rooms for a family of five.
    - Message the hotel to confirm bedding and whether children count toward capacity.
    ## Book early
Family-sized rooms are limited and go first, especially in peak seasons.
Booking well ahead gives you the pick of the family-friendly options rather than squeezing into whatever’s left.
    ...
    ## Read the capacity rules, not just the photos
The commonest booking mistake is assuming a room that looks big enough is bookable for your numbers.
Japanese hotels strictly enforce a stated maximum occupancy, often for fire regulations, and children above a certain age (frequently around six, but it varies) count as full guests who need their own bedding.
A room shown with two beds may simply not be reservable for four, whatever the floor space.
Always filter by your exact headcount, and if a room looks perfect but its cap is below your family size, message the hotel to ask about an extra futon or bed before booking rather than after.
    ## How Japanese hotels count children
Japanese lodgings price by the number of people, not by the room, and a child only becomes a charged guest once they need their own bed.
Below that line they can usually be a “co-sleeper” (添い寝, soine) sharing an adult’s existing bed, generally free, and booking engines expect you to enter only the adults and add the co-sleeping child in the notes or at check-in.
The near-universal cut-off is entering elementary school (about age six or seven): under it, a co-sleeping child is typically free (usually one child per adult or per bed); at elementary age and up, the child counts as an adult-rate guest who needs a bed.
An “existing bed” means the child sleeps in a bed already in the room; an “extra bed” or rollaway (エキストラベッド) is a paid, request-only add-on that’s limited in stock and often can’t be arranged same-day.
    ## Why a big-looking room shows “no availability” for five
Room capacity in Japan is set by law (the Hotel Business Act plus fire and building codes), so every room has a legally registered maximum headcount, and a ryokan room is further limited by how many futons fit the tatami area.
Booking platforms enforce that registered maximum, so a room with plenty of floor space still returns “no availability” for a party of five if it’s registered for four.
That single rule is why families of five so often need a Japanese-style room, an apartment, connecting rooms, or simply two rooms.
    ## Chains that fit families (verified policies)
    - MIMARU: apartment hotels built for families, where rooms sleep 4–10 and have a kitchen, with Japanese-style, bunk-bed and multi-bedroom layouts.
Up to two children age 6 or under aren’t counted toward capacity and can share an adult’s bed.
Baby cribs are free for infants age 2 and under (limited), and bed guards are free to rent (limited); note both in the booking comments.
    - Tokyu Stay: a pre-school child shares an existing bed free (one child per adult); from elementary age they’re charged as an adult, and only some branches offer extra-bed twins, so check the specific hotel.
    - Sotetsu Fresa Inn: pre-school children stay free (one child under six per bed as a co-sleeper), and from elementary school they’re booked at the adult rate.
    - Richmond Hotels: unusually generous, with children up to sixth grade of elementary school co-sleeping free, one per bed (no extra futon provided).
Extra beds can’t be arranged same-day.
Confirm on the specific property page, as it varies by location.
    ## Cots, bed rails and booking two rooms
Baby cots (ベビーベッド) are often free but limited, and usually restricted to infants under a set age.
Bed rails (ベッドガード) are commonly free to rent but also limited and age-restricted.
Request either in advance, in the booking notes or by contacting the property directly.
Check one more thing carefully: Japanese hotels generally don’t allow children to stay in a room without a responsible adult, so putting the kids in their own room next door isn’t a given.
Connecting rooms with an adult in each, or a single larger room, is the reliable answer for bigger families.
    ## Questions to ask before you book
    - Does this exact room sleep all of us: two adults and [x] children aged [ages]?
    - How do you count our children’s ages toward capacity and price?
    - Are the beds proper beds, a sofa bed or futons, and how many are there?
    - Can we add a cot or bed rail, and is there a charge?
    - If we need connecting rooms, can you guarantee the connection (not just adjacent rooms)?
    ...
    ## What our own database says about rooms for five
Our accommodation dataset holds 188 published properties across Japan, every one of them assessed for families and checked against the property’s own material.
Of those 188, 90 can put a family of five in a single room — a shade under half.
Sixty-two can take six or more.
    ...
    ## Connecting rooms are rarer than the search filter suggests
Of the 188 properties, only 33 sell connecting rooms as something you can actually book — 32 as a bookable room category and one as a guaranteed booking.
    ...
    ## The order to do this in
Given the numbers above, the sequence that works is: decide your headcount honestly, including whether a child has grown past co-sleeping; filter for that exact number before you look at anything else; and settle the rooms in each city before you commit to the route between them.
    ...
    ## Common questions
    - **Do hotels in Japan have family rooms?**
Yes, but they’re limited and standard rooms are small.
Search specifically for family, quad, Japanese-style or apartment rooms, filter by your number of guests, and book early, because family-sized rooms go first.
    - **How do we fit a family of five in a Japanese hotel?**
Look for Japanese-style (washitsu) rooms with futons, apartment hotels like Mimaru, or family/quad rooms, and consider connecting rooms or two rooms.
Because room capacity is legally capped, confirm directly that the exact room sleeps five and how your children’s ages count toward capacity.
    - **Do children stay free in Japanese hotels?**
Usually yes below elementary-school age: a pre-school child can often “co-sleep” (soine) in an adult’s existing bed for free, typically one child per adult.
From about age six or seven they’re generally charged at the adult rate and need their own bed.
Policies vary by chain (Mimaru, Tokyu Stay, Sotetsu and Richmond all publish their own), so confirm for your children’s ages.
