Questions & answers

What is an early returned missionary?

“An early returned missionary is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who returns home before completing their full-time mission service. Early returns happen for many reasons including physical illness, mental health challenges, family circumstances, personal choice, or worthiness issues.”

Why do I feel depressed or anxious after my mission?

“This is often called post-mission depression or post-mission crash. It usually shows up weeks or months after returning home and includes a flatness, loss of direction, sometimes real depression or anxiety. It is not a spiritual failing, it reflects the size of the transition and typically does not respond to willpower alone.”

What if I don't find a service mission fulfilling but I can't return to full-time proselytizing? Should I end my mission early?

“This is a personal decision that requires thought, prayer, and conversations with family, church leaders, and potentially medical providers. If the service mission is actively making things worse, it isn't serving anyone. There is no shame in either direction. What matters is making the right decision for you, not one based on what others expect.”
