Which ShapeShell™ material should I specify?
“Start with where the element sits and what the fire requirement is. External wall that must be non-combustible: ShapeShell™-RC. External geometry that is large, deeply cantilevered or too heavy in concrete: ShapeShell™-RT. Internal ceilings, bulkheads, column wraps and decorative elements: ShapeShell™-RG. Where a project sits between two of those, the decision is usually made on weight against the existing structure.”
Is ShapeShell non-combustible?
“ShapeShell-RC is. It is tested to AS/NZS 1530.1 by Ignis Labs with a result of not deemed combustible. ShapeShell-RT is not non-combustible: it is a polymer composite that achieves Group 1 under AS 5637 and B-s2, d0 under EN 13501-1. Both are genuinely strong fire results, but only RC satisfies a non-combustible external wall requirement.”
What is the difference between GRC and GFRC?
“Nothing material. GRC (glass reinforced concrete) is the British and Australian term, GFRC the American. Both describe concrete reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibres in place of steel.”

Is FRP the same as fibreglass?
“Fibreglass (GFRP) is the most common type of FRP. Carbon fibre and aramid composites are FRP too. ShapeShell-RT can be engineered with any of them depending on the load case.”
What is GRG used for?
“interior ceilings, walls and sculptural features. It is an interior material; for external work the equivalent is GRC, which we manufacture as ShapeShell™-RC.”
GRG vs GRC, which do I need?
“interior and seamless paint finish: GRG. External, wet areas or non-combustibility to AS 1530.1: GRC.”
What finishes and textures are available for this materials?
“We provide a broad spectrum of surface options depending on the material selected.”
Is composite cladding suitable for tunnels and rail environments?
“Yes, and corrosion is the main reason it gets specified there. There is no reinforcing steel in the panel to carbonate or suffer chloride attack, so washdown, humidity and salt do not drive the maintenance cycle the way they do with steel backed systems.”
How does it affect crane and possession time?
“Elements are a fraction of the mass of equivalent precast, so picks are smaller and faster and the secondary steel behind them is lighter. On constrained sites and short possessions that is usually where the programme saving comes from, not from the fabrication itself.”
Do you supply supporting steelwork and fixings?
“Yes. For civil work the element is supplied engineered, with its backing structure and fixing design documented, so the site crew installs a complete unit.”
What is the largest formwork mould you can make?
“Our CNC machining envelope is up to 36 m x 5 m x 3 m. Larger geometries are split into modules, trial assembled in the factory and bolted together on site.”
How many pours will a composite mould take?
“It depends on the geometry, the release regime and how the mould is handled between pours. We nominate an expected reuse cycle for each mould at design stage rather than quoting a generic figure, because a gently curved headstock mould and a deeply undercut architectural mould behave very differently.”
Can you match the architect’s 3D model exactly?
“The mould is machined from the model rather than redrawn from it, and the finished mould is 3D scanned and compared back against the model before dispatch. That comparison is the record we hand over.”
Which ShapeShell material should we specify for an interior?
“RG for painted, seamless interior work such as ceilings and feature walls. RT where the element is large, needs to be light, or has to take contact, cleaning or moisture. RC where the interior wants concrete mass and texture, or where a non combustible material is required.”
How large can a single internal panel be?
“The limit is usually the lift or the corridor, not the mould. We size panels to the delivery route and the install method, then set joint lines to suit the design rather than the truck.”
Can it be painted to match the rest of the ceiling?
“Yes. RG in particular is designed to take a seamless painted finish and be made good on site so the moulded element and the adjoining plasterboard read as one surface.”
