NYVO Investment Advisor: “SEBI Registered Investment Adviser. Your family finance fitness coach – honest, conflict-free money advice for Indian families.”

    • What are the most common hidden bank charges in India?

“The usual ones are minimum-balance penalties, ATM fees beyond the free limit, SMS-alert charges, debit-card annual fees, cheque and auto-debit return charges, forex markup, and account-closure or duplicate-statement fees. Most carry 18 percent GST. Small individually, together they can run into a few thousand rupees a year.”

    • How can I avoid minimum balance penalties?

“Keep the required monthly average balance, or switch to a lower-requirement account. A basic savings (BSBD) account has no minimum-balance rule at all. Setting a calendar alert before month-end helps, so a temporary dip does not trigger a slab-based penalty with GST added on top.”

    • Do banks charge for SMS alerts?

“Often, yes. Many banks levy a small quarterly fee for transaction SMS alerts, billed automatically. It looks negligible per quarter but adds up across accounts and years. Some banks waive it or provide free alerts through their app, so check what your particular account includes.”
