For a few URLs you manage, Google says an eligible Search Console owner or full user can request indexing through URL Inspection; for many URLs, submit an accurate sitemap. IndexNow can notify participating search engines of meaningful changes, but it does not notify Google or every AI service. Check crawl or index status and relevant answers separately. A submitted request, sitemap, or IndexNow response does not guarantee indexing, a citation, or a fresh answer, and there is no guaranteed catch-up time.","sourceIds":["google-recrawl","indexnow-faq","google-ai-features"]},"sections":[{"title":"A corrected page and a fresh answer are different outcomes","body":"When an important public fact changes, such as a product price or service detail, update the page people should rely on first. Then separate the other questions: has a search engine received a discovery signal, crawled the page, indexed it, or shown the corrected fact in an answer? Each requires different evidence. Google says crawling may take days to weeks, and submitting a request does not guarantee that a page will be crawled or indexed.\n\nThe illustration distinguishes observations such as a crawl, retrieval, mention, citation, recommendation, and referral. They are not a promised sequence: evidence of one does not establish the others. If structured data is present, keep it consistent with the visible page text. Google’s guidance for its AI Search features also recommends making important content available in text and keeping relevant business information up to date.\n\nMaintain the sitemap as an accurate discovery input, not proof of indexing. Include the canonical URL you want considered for search results. Set lastmod to the actual significant modification time when page content, structured data, or links change substantially, and only when the value is accurate and verifiable. Do not refresh it for a cosmetic change or copyright-year update. Google ignores priority and changefreq values.","sourceIds":["google-sitemap","google-ai-features"]},{"title":"Choose the Google Search route by how many URLs changed","body":"For a few changed URLs that you manage, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to request indexing if you are an owner or full user of the property. There is a quota for individual URL requests, and repeatedly requesting the same URL will not make Google crawl it faster. For many changed URLs, submit an accurate sitemap instead. Google treats a sitemap submission as a hint, not a guarantee that it will fetch the sitemap or crawl the listed URLs.\n\nAfter submitting, allow time for processing and check the actual page and index state with Search Console. Google says crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks; that is an estimate of possible crawling time, not a deadline for indexing or an updated answer.","sourceIds":["google-recrawl","google-sitemap"],"items":[{"title":"A few changed URLs","body":"Use URL Inspection to request indexing when you meet Google’s Search Console access requirement. It complements a sitemap; it is not a notification route to Google or a universal distribution channel for AI services. Participating search engines make their own crawl and indexing decisions.\n\nFor manual setup, IndexNow requires proof of control of the host using a key file. Keep credentials private, and do not expose or log the key. A CMS or hosting provider may handle submissions for you. Submit only URLs that changed meaningfully, such as a product fact or price, rather than repeatedly notifying unchanged pages.\n\nInterpret responses narrowly. Under the IndexNow protocol, HTTP 200 means the URL was received. HTTP 202 means it was received while key validation is pending. Neither response proves that a search engine crawled or indexed the page. Keep a record of the submission and response without recording the key.","sourceIds":["indexnow-protocol","indexnow-faq"]},{"title":"Read each signal for what it establishes","body":"A change to a page, a request to a search engine, an index report, and an AI answer are evidence from different stages and surfaces. It updates the public canonical product page with the accurate price and makes sure any structured data agrees with the visible text. It updates sitemap lastmod only if the change is significant and the date is truthful. For a few URLs, an eligible Search Console user requests indexing; for many, the business submits its sitemap. If IndexNow is configured, it notifies participating search engines about that meaningful change and records the response without the key.\n\nThe business then checks Google’s page and index state separately from the IndexNow receipt, and tests a relevant question in the AI experience it cares about, retaining the question, date, and answer. If an answer is still stale, that is an observation about that answer at that time.
